Explore the need for sustainability in logistics and transport expos and how Multimodal is addressing this. Join us and be part of a greener future.

Trade shows and expo events are some of the best for bringing together like-minded professionals and creating a space where innovation can flourish bringing together attendees, exhibitors, and speakers alike. Doing so requires a large amount of movement, planning, and accommodating for health and safety regulations and more.

This means that events can take a lot of management and investment to be successful. However, one of the considerations that often goes unnoticed when all of these costs stack up is the cost of an event on the environment.

With our years of experience running the UK’s largest logistics and transport expo, we’re no strangers to the importance of sustainability, not only in event planning but logistics and transport in general and we have implemented several green strategies to ensure our events are as sustainable as possible. Join us as we look at how events can be more green, and how Multimodal 2024 is committed to sustainable exhibition and event design.

Why is Sustainability so important?

Sustainability is a central tenet for all sectors as B2B and B2C consumers are increasingly conscious of their effect on the environment. Trade shows, with their historically significant carbon footprints, are no different in this endeavour and find themselves uniquely positioned to champion the cause of environmental responsibility.

By adopting sustainable practices, these events can significantly mitigate their ecological impact, align with global sustainability goals, and foster a culture of conscientious business practices.

Pioneering Sustainable practices and exhibition design

At Multimodal, our approach to sustainability is multifaceted, encompassing everything from venue selection to waste management and energy consumption. The event's location, Birmingham’s NEC, is a landmark located in a central UK location. This convenient space for businesses around the country along with its prestige and exemplary commitment to environmental principles, allows us to create an event that is memorable and includes fantastic public transport links and existing infrastructure.

We also practice modern waste management and recycling by prioritising biodegradable materials and recycling where possible. Our event goes beyond traditional waste management strategies by implementing a comprehensive recycling programme that encompasses not only common recyclables but also composting organic waste, significantly reducing landfill contributions.

Digital transformation is a large part of the logistics space and our event fully uses the digital tools available to minimise paper use. From digital registration to online resources, we are always looking for new ways to improve our sustainability practices.

These changes mark a shift towards a greener approach and one we have committed to by signing the pledge for the Net Zero Carbon Events. This pledge aimed at the events industry, promises to:

1. Before the end of 2024, publish the organisation’s pathway to achieve net zero by 2050 at the latest, with an interim target in line with the Paris Agreement’s requirement to reduce global GHG emissions by 50% by 2030

2. Collaborate with partners, suppliers and customers to drive change across the value chain

3. Measure and track our Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions according to industry best practice

4. Report on our progress at least every two years

Outside of our practices, we are champions for change within the sector we represent and include judged awards for sustainability, diversity and inclusion, and more to celebrate businesses in transport that are making a difference.

Our dedication to sustainability is evident in our strategic planning and focus on this topic and we’re pleased to see the groundswell of support with Multimodal 2024 already recording a record number of registrations. This support goes to show that change does not have to be wholesale. It can be small steps and tactics that are affordable, and realistic, that all ultimately lead to a more sustainable business.

The ripple effect of green trade shows

We hope by using our platform we can provide a positive impact, set a standard for the industry, and inspire businesses to adopt greener practices in their operations. In doing so, our focus on sustainability can act as a catalyst for change in transport and logistics, and demonstrate that environmental responsibility and business success are not mutually exclusive.
