Over the past 5 years, the volumes between the UK and the Port of Antwerp have increased strongly and are up with 18%.
Both the liquid bulk as the container segment –valid for 91% of the trade – are growing. In tonnage the liquid bulk has increased with 21% over the last 5 years where the container segment shows an impressive improvement of almost 60% in TEU. Equally important is the fact that the growth is balanced and both on imports as on exports more cargo is handled via the Port of Antwerp.
2016 has been a strong year for the UK in view of export and also in the cargo flow between UK and the port of Antwerp this is noticeable.
For both the liquid bulk and the container segment growth figures of respectively 9% and 33% (in TEU) can be reported.
Of course the devaluation of the British pound is one of the factors which boosted the volumes during 2016 however we’ve also seen an improved connectivity between the UK and Port of Antwerp which enabled this evolution. In this respect MSC launched during Oct 2016 a new service connecting Antwerp directly with Liverpool and Portbury.
