Turnover climbs at Pall-Ex

Adds new members to the Group
Turnover has risen to almost £120m at a Leicestershire-headquartered logistics group despite difficult trading conditions, with underlying EBITDA also increasing.

Pall-Ex Group Ltd has reported a turnover of £117.6m for the year to 31 July 2021, up from £87.2m in 2020.

Pre-tax profits climbed to £786,000 over the same period, while the group acheived an EBITDA of £1.1m.

The main driver behind the group's improved performance was Pall-Ex (UK) which is comprised of more than 100 shareholder members and four subsidiary depots.

Improved network coverage and member stability at Pall-Ex (UK) helped reduce costs which, alongside improved efficiency at its main hub, led to a near £1m increase in profits at the division.

Chief executive Kevin Buchanan said:

"I'm very pleased with the continued improvements across the entire group during the finance year ending 31 July 2021, especially in the context of the exceptional trading environment we were dealing with.

"We made the decision to invest heavily in people, technology and infrastructure for the long-term rather than to maximise short-term profits to the detriment of the long-term success of the business. It is the power of our ownership structure enables us to do so.

"The underlying EBITDA at group level is actually almost three times that declared in the audited accounts on a like-for-like basis on the previous year when you take into account the additional investments made.

"We are already seeing substantial continuous improvements in the current year, which underlines our long-term investment strategy is correct."

Separately, 4Plinks has become the latest shareholder member of Pall-Ex Group

Southampton-based transport business 4PLinks has invested in its future by joining both the Pall-Ex and Fortec pallet distribution networks as a shareholder member.

The move, which signifies 4PLinks’ long term commitment to Pall-Ex and Fortec’s parent company, Pall-Ex Group, will deliver a range of benefits to the south coast outfit, which has seen major success in its relatively short history.

Founded in 2017, Ecommerce Supply Chain (T/A 4PLinks) has built its reputation on its specialist logistics services including General and Container Haulage, Customs Clearance, Warehousing and Amazon Fulfilment.

The business prides itself on being a one-stop shop for its customers, thanks to its in-house services that ensure quality is at the heart of its operation.

By becoming shareholder members in Pall-Ex Group, 4PLinks now have access to a network of more than 150 independent haulage companies, united by their passion for quality and service excellence.

This network means that 4PLinks’ customers can now send pallets across the UK and beyond quickly and cost effectively thanks to Pall-Ex Group’s Hub-and-Spoke model.

As part of its membership, the business will cover the SP1-6 and SP9-11 postcodes for the two networks.

Membership also has other benefits, as it allows 4PLinks to utilise Pall-Ex Group’s award winning IT system, Nexus, and its range of sales and marketing support services.

Managing Director of 4PLinks, Siming Wang, explains why he believed Pall-Ex Group provided the best opportunity for his business.

“We believe that the shareholder membership opportunities with Pall-Ex Group enhance service levels of every member.

“Being invested in the success of the business benefits our customers as well as all the shareholder members too.

“We are excited to be part of the Pall-Ex Group journey and deliver excellent service to our fellow members and customers.”

Pall-Ex Group’s Managing Director – UK Business Units, Barry Byers, oversees both the Fortec and Pall-Ex network and is looking forward to developing the businesses with the help of shareholder members like 4PLinks.

Welcoming them to the two networks, Barry comments:

“4PLinks are a really exciting business and we are very happy to have them join both of Pall-Ex Group’s UK networks.

“Having started only five years ago, they have Mr Wang and the team have already shown they are dedicated to providing a quality service across the board having built such a successful business.

“We look forward to seeing them continue with their growth and the positive effect they will have on our networks.”

Separately, Biggleswade-based business AG & Sons Transport Ltd has joined the Pall-Ex network in a move that will strengthen its service offering for its longstanding customers.

The family-owned business with a proud history stretching back to 1975 joins Pall-Ex as a shareholder member.

This means that it joins a network of more than 90 shareholder members, all united in their pursuit of excellence and their ambition to deliver the best possible service to each other and their customers.

The previous decade has seen impressive growth for AG & Sons.

Having operated a successful transport business for more than 30 years, AG & Sons ventured into warehousing and storage in 2010.

Successful contracts soon meant that two distribution centres were commissioned with over 50,000 square feet of both racked and free-space storage areas available.

Becoming shareholder members of Pall-Ex now creates greater scope for the business to grow, as it facilitates cost effective local, national and international palletised freight distribution.

From its base in Hertfordshire, AG & Sons will cover a number of SG postcode areas.

Operations Director, Grant Gallafent explains why the business took the opportunity to become a shareholder of Pall-Ex.

He comments:

“Becoming part of the Pall-Ex network is a great opportunity for our business to grow and offer even more services to our customers.

“The pallet network operations fit well alongside our other work, with our current infrastructure built so we can easily scale up operations when needed.

“We are all really looking forward to working with Pall-Ex and our fellow shareholder members to ensure we continue to offer excellent service.”

Pall-Ex Group’s Managing Director – UK Business Units, Barry Byers, oversees the Pall-Ex network and is looking forward to developing the network further.

Welcoming AG & Sons to the network, Barry comments:

“AG & Sons have a strong history of delivering excellent service and we are very happy to have them join the Pall-Ex network as shareholder members.

“With over 40 years of experience in the industry, we know that Pall-Ex’s offering is in safe hands in the SG area.

“I know I speak for everyone at Pall-Ex when I say that we are excited to see AG & Sons go from strength to strength in the coming years.”
