Masterfreight wins extra business by joining Fortec Distribution Network

Masterfreight has expanded its offering to customers and won new business by joining the Fortec Distribution Network and adding palletised collections and deliveries to its range of services.

The family-run firm, which has a 110,000 square foot warehouse in Oldbury, West Midlands, specialising in freight forwarding, bespoke ISPM15 export packing, UK, Ireland and European road transport, receiving imported goods from all parts of the world and exporting goods abroad.

The bulk of its work is loading and unloading trailers, shipping containers, storing goods for customers and picking and packing for onward distribution in the UK. Until recently all of the pallet deliveries in the UK were carried out by third parties.

Seeing an opportunity for growth, Masterfreight decided to offer its own pallet collection and delivery service. It joined the Fortec Distribution Network in May and has never looked back.

General Manager Ajay Balu said: “The only service that was missing from our domestic operations was pallet delivery and collection. Now we are doing 90% of our customers’ pallet deliveries.

“Joining the Fortec Distribution Network has been very positive for us without a doubt. It is called the Fortec Distribution Network because it is more than a simple pallet network – and that is what our customers like.

“Because we are a family-run business we wouldn’t join anything unless we were comfortable ourselves with it. It’s not always about finding the bottom dollar rate – our customers value services and Fortec is a good network.

“A lot of our customers are more than satisfied with the changeover, having trialled us before making the switch. They also like the size of the Fortec pallets, which are a lot bigger than many third-party pallets.”

The Fortec Distribution Network has more than 70 members in the UK and has recently invested heavily in technology that allows consignments to be fully tracked from pick up to delivery. Most of its members now use the Fortec Connect app that was developed for use on phones with Android operating systems, rendering paper-based systems irrelevant.

Masterfreight works closely with two other companies owned by the same family, haulage firm Alpha Transport Services Ltd and shipping container storage company Central Container Services Ltd, based from the same site in Oldbury.

As well as its spacious warehouse Masterfreight has six purpose built dock level loading bays and overhead cranes able to handle up to 10,000 kilo grams in one lift. Its base at Oldbury is close to both the M5 and M6 motorways.
