A giant Peel Group development on land near Haydock Park Racecourse could create 2,500 new jobs.
Peel Logistics has revealed plans for a vast £160m facility on the site. The Haydock Point scheme would see up to 1.8m sq ft of built space.
It is the third scheme to be announced this year for land between junctions 22 and 24 of the M6.
Developers have promised the three separate projects could create a total of 9,000 jobs, but it could see greenbelt land lost in Haydock and Newton-Le-Willows.
They will only go ahead if St Helens council adopts its draft Local Plan, a blueprint for the borough’s future which it launched a public consultation on last month.
Neil Dickinson, chief operating officer at Peel Logistics, said:
“The location and quality of Haydock Point make this a game-changing opportunity for St Helens to put itself on the national logistics map.
“There is huge demand and a major shortage of suitable sites for logistics.
“We have no doubt that once planning is in place this site can be delivered to an exceptional quality within a short space of time”.
Peel are also consulting the public about the scheme before formally seeking the green light from St Helens council.
