Ghent short-sea
Ghent Container Terminal has signed a concession contract with Ghent Port Company AMC for the construction and operation of a multimodal sea-going/inland navigation container terminal in port of Ghent. The concession is valid for 30 years.
The JV “Ghent Container Terminal” is formed by the Flemish stevedoring and logistics group called Manuport Group and the Finnish container shipping company and terminal holding Container Finance Ltd. Ghent Container Terminal is situated on the south side of the Kluizendok and takes up a surface area of almost 16 hectares that is being developed in 2 phases. Total capacity is expected to reach 300,000 TEU per year. 240 metres of quay are planned for the handling of inland vessels and 216 m of quay for short sea services. The terminal will be equipped with a railway connection in 2010. The “Ghent Container Terminal” joint venture is a neutral container terminal operator that offers multimodal terminal services to all seagoing and inland navigation container shipping companies. The development of a multi-user container terminal on the Ghent left bank is of capital importance for a further sustainable development of the existing and new industrial and logistical activities along the Ghent-Terneuzen canal and the industrial site “De Nest”, but mainly the “Kluizendok” itself and the logistical and industrial park “Rieme North” that is under construction. Moreover, the terminal will also play an important role as gateway for the Seine-North connection with Northern France and Paris and the Flemish hinterland. At first the terminal will be fed by feeder containers from surrounding ports and a weekly container sailing between Ghent and Finland/Russia. Talks are also going on for an extension to regular liner services with southern short sea shipping destinations owing to which Ghent will become a gateway between Northern and Southern Europe.
