CMA CGM operates container barges on the Rhone
The inland navigation department of French shipping line CMA CGM now operates there inland barges for container transportation on the Rhone.
The service is operated under the River Shuttle Containers name (RSC), which transports containers on rivers and canals as well as road and rail. To meet growing demand for inland transportation, RSC has put the "Nirwana", the "Guadamia" and the "Camael" into service on the Rhone and the Saone. The environment-friendly vessels are self-propelled and use 41% less fuel than push barge units. The 200 teu units are 130 m long, 11.4 m wide and have a 3.5 m draft when loaded. RSC can now offer three weekly departures, which adds up to 1,200 teu capacity, on the Fos-Lyon-Macon-Chalon route.
