Superfast to end Rosyth-Zeebrugge ferry service

Greek ferry operator Superfast Ferries has decided to end its ro-pax ferry service between Rosyth and Zeebrugge in September.

High fuel costs and low passenger numbers are thought to be the reasons behind the measure, but the company has not confirmed this. The Scottish government said it was "disappointed, because it was a commercially successful service." Forth Ports, operator of the Rosyth ferry terminal, shares the disappointment because "the ferry link is an important part of Scotland's access to European markets."

Forth Ports indicated that from its own analysis of the route it could attract between 60,000 and 200,000 freight units year, making it a viable and profitable route for the operator with the right mix of vessels and frequency. The service started with two ships in 2003. In 2005 one ship was withdrawn and transferred to a Baltic route. Last year that ship was replaced by the present vessel. When the service was cut in 2005, Forth Ports said it might run its own freight service.
