New Bibby Distribution site achieves British Retail Consortium global standard

Bibby Distribution's new flagship site at Elland in West Yorkshire is celebrating successfully attaining BRC certification. The British Retail Consortium introduced the Food Technical Standard in 1998 in response to the needs of the retail and brand owner industries and has quickly become an invaluable Standard that is now widely respected both in the UK and globally.

In 2006 the BRC extended its coverage of these industries' needs by introducing the BRC Global Standard for Storage & Distribution to ensure that good practice is extended throughout the logistics chain.

The Standard requires an effective Quality Management System to be in place and strict adherence to procedures that must demonstrate the ability to ensure product legality, safety, and quality. Key issues include hygiene, security, traceability, and the identification and handling of non conforming product (damage, contamination, etc.).

Movement to the BRC Standards was prompted by Arla Foods as part of the contract renewal negotiations last year and coincided with the transfer of operations from Bradford to Elland.

Prior to this an effective Quality Management System had already been operated at Bradford but to achieve the BRC Standard the entire system had to be overhauled and incorporate a number of additional provisions. The efforts of the staff at Elland to introduce the Standard on a tight time scale and during the both the peak season and the transfer into a brand new site are to be congratulated.

Gary Sharp Divisional Director said "It's an excellent achievement for the Elland operation. Not only does it give our current customer base the confidence that their products are being dealt with to a high standard, it will also prove beneficial when tendering for new business."
