First GBRf opens new headquarters at Felixstowe

Growth in customer demand for intermodal services fuels expansion First GBRf has opened its new intermodal HQ at the Port of Felixstowe to meet the growing demand for intermodal freight services.

The new headquarters, which was officially opened by David Gledhill Chief Operating Officer of the Port on Friday 9 November, comes as the success of First GBRf’s intermodal business continues to grow at an exceptional rate.

John Smith, Managing Director at First GBRf, said: “From humble beginnings the company’s business carries nearly a fifth of all rail cargo from the port. With the UK so reliant on imported goods and planning authority having been agreed for added capacity at the Port of Felixstowe and other ports, further growth in First GBRf’s intermodal business is assured.”

First GBRf started running intermodal services at Felixstowe following a ground- breaking partnership with MSC shipping in February 2002.

Officials at the Port of Felixstowe have been instrumental in helping First GBRf expand its business, both in terms of increasing rail capacity by 100% in three years and in the development of the new headquarters at the port.

The expansion has led to First GBRf running the most efficient freight service at Felixstowe. Its’ Hams Hall service is the best loaded train operating in the country, filling an average 93% of the available capacity.

The success of First GBRf’s intermodal services has been largely attributed to its simplicity and customer-focused nature which is led by Julie Garn, Contracts Manager Logistics alongside Ralph Goldney, Deputy Managing Director.
