BIFA & Multimodal in partnership - again

BIFA is the trade association for UK-registered companies engaged in the international movement of freight by all modes of transport. BIFA members provide one or more of the following services:

  • European road and rail distribution
  • Maritime intermodal services
  • Air freight consolidation and forwarding
  • Customs broking and consultancy
  • Packing of goods for export
  • Warehousing and distribution
  • Logistics and supply chain management

BIFA members, frequently known collectively as freight forwarders, offer a wide range of services within these disciplines. Most importantly a freight forwarder is independent of the physical carrier and thus is able to choose the best option(s) for the customers' distribution needs.

This independence has enabled freight forwarders to provide invaluable support to the world's trading community in identifying opportunities within the supply chain in order to make the best use of resources, cutting out wasted activity and maximising profits.

One of a freight forwarder's strengths is the ability to group together (consolidate) cargoes, making them up into full loads for warehouse-to-warehouse transport and distribution to the individual buyers.

Freight forwarding companies were in the vanguard of the commercial implementation of information technology techniques - technology that benefits the customer by improving service efficiency and minimising costs.

BIFA's role is to provide a focus for the international freight distribution industry, and its mission is:

"To provide effective representation and support for the UK international freight services industry; to promote good practice and total quality in the provision of freight services by all members, and to encourage the membership to observe the highest standards of professional competence"
