Ambient Systems at Multimodal

Ambient Systems was founded in 2004 with the vision to create a robust, scalable, and very low-power embedded wireless networking platform. Headquartered in the Netherlands, Ambient Systems traces its roots to the University of Twente, where the company's founders and researchers have been working on wireless sensor networks for many years.

Experience gained in EU project

The Ambient Systems founders gained at least some of their ideas while working for the University of Twente, which was the coordinator of the EYES IST project on energy efficient sensor networks. EYES performed research on the architecture and the technology needed for building self-organizing and collaborative sensor networks using reconfigurable smart sensor nodes, which are self-aware, self-reconfigurable and autonomous.

Research and product development

Ambient continuously works on research and product development, in which knowledge and many years of experience in embedded systems, electronics, and communication networks are of major importance.

Ambient Systems produces hardware and software to build reliable, low-power embedded wireless networks. Ambient's compact, low-power network elements can be used in markets like industrial automation, transport and logistics, home control, and environmental monitoring and other low-power, low data-rate applications.

Vision

The emerging machine-to-machine industry involves "embedding intelligence" in everything from cars and home appliances to oil and gas pipelines, vending machines, electric meters and games. These systems are quite different from current computer systems, as they are based on a large number and unbounded set of networked hardware artefacts and software entities, embedded in everyday objects or realized as new types of device. Ambient Systems communications will be driven by devices interacting with people and other devices.

Ambient Systems' products allow OEMs and systems integrators to extend their product lines to offer tiny wireless devices that can be placed in locations never before possible with existing technologies. Ambient Systems' low-power, low-data rate devices have immediate utility in hundreds of industrial, medical, consumer and military applications providing integrated localization, sensing and actuation.
