Newcastle unites with Multimodal as Port of Tyne confirm stand

The Port of Tyne Authority is a trust port, which is an independent statutory body governed by its own unique local legislation and controlled by an independent board. There are no shareholders or owners. Any surplus is ploughed back into the Port for the benefit of the stakeholders of the trust. The stakeholders are all those using the port, employees and all those individuals, organisations and groups having an interest in the operation of the Port.

Apart from usual marine services, the Port operates several logistics divisions:-

Port of Tyne Distribution

Based at Tyne Dock, South Shields, Tyne and Wear on a 1.7ha site, Port of Tyne Distribution is an integral part of the Port’s operation. Port of Tyne Distribution’s portfolio is further enhanced through its membership of the Pall-Ex nationwide network. The hub and spoke network provides customers with a very efficient, cost-effective, next-day national delivery.

Member companies are strategically placed around the UK to provide a wide range of local knowledge and resources and the network benefits from a fleet of over 5,400 vehicles, over 70 depots and over 2.4 million square feet of warehousing. As well as a guaranteed next day service Port of Tyne Distribution also offers timed, booked, tail-lift and 2 day deliveries of quarter, half, single and multiple pallets in addition to storage, warehousing, stock management, product selection and specialised distribution.

Port of Tyne Logistics Services

Port of Tyne Logistics Services provides customers with complete supply chain management within one unique facility. Based at Tyne Dock, the facility benefits from direct road, rail and sea connections, extensive warehousing and transit shed storage and an in-house distribution company. Ideally placed on the northeast coast close to continental Europe, Scandinavia and all primary communication networks, shipping through this multimodal facility offers distinct advantages. This centralised integration enables cost effective, tailored packages to be offered which are essential in today's fast-changing marketplace.

Deepwater facilities located 5km from the sea provide“lock-free” access for vessels up to panamax size. The Port has a first-class reputation for conventional cargo handling expertise with regular inducement calls from all major deep-sea general cargo lines.

Port of Tyne Warehousing

The Port of Tyne provides of 8.6 ha of undercover storage within the secure port complex. This comprises of 4ha multi-user warehouses, sole occupancy warehouses, and 2.7 ha common user Customs Approved transit sheds.

Warehousing has been developed in partnership with customers and provides the most logical and cost effective solutions to satisfy all storage and distribution requirements.

Recent warehousing has been designed to accommodate a VNA (very narrow aisle) racking system to maximise storage capacity with 53,000 pallet spaces available in Tyne Dock. These warehouses are also connected to the Port’s computerised warehouse management system that uses guided putaway and tracks all pallet movements by means of bar codes and radio data terminals.

Port of Tyne Rail

The Port of Tyne has an extensive rail siding network capable of handling both the export and import of general cargo, automotive, intermodal and bulk commodities. The rail capability forms an integral part of the Port's total logistics and supply chain management service built around this integrated transport complex.

The Terminal is directly connected to the national rail network and is capable of handling Channel Tunnel train lengths of 118 standard length units (SLU). i.e. 750 metres. The Port of Tyne Rail Terminal comprises various specific cargo handling areas.

Intermodal Terminal

Comprises No 1, No 2 and No 3 sidings that are situated within the container terminal (Tyne Logistics Co Ltd) for the handling and storage of container boxes, both import and export. Train lengths up to 750m can be accommodated. Heavy-duty reach stacker and forklift equipment is used to handle container loading / unloading. The equipment is capable of lifting 34 tonnes from both No 1 and No 2 Sidings. The rail facility allows the transfer of import/export containers from short sea feeder ships.

Automotive Terminal

Comprises sidings No 4 and 5, which are capable of accommodating train lengths of up to 750m. These are located inside a securely fenced area.

Secure General Cargo Area

No 6 siding, together with Numbers 4 and 5, provides a secure general cargo handling facility. Siding 6 provides 230m of loading length with Sidings 4 and 5 providing a further 337m and 291m respectively.

The facility provides a secure compound for the import/export of general cargo by rail for transit shipment by sea, road or into storage.

Bulk Terminal

The facility is currently used for the export of coal and ferrous scrap but is capable of handling other bulk commodities and has room for expansion.

Port of Tyne Stevedoring

The Port has a first-class reputation for cargo handling - of all types of cargoes - bulk, breakbulk, containers, cars etc. The in-house workforce offers flexible working patterns to suit all commercial needs. This highly skilled workforce is supported by a comprehensive pool of modern handling equipment to ensure an efficient and reliable service with heavy lift cranage of up to 100 tonnes.
